What You Need To Know About Collecting Horse Figures

By Lela Perkins

Horse figures are not just for those who love horses, they're for everyone. Considering the role these animals enjoy in society, it really should come as no great shock that people love collecting ornaments depicting horses. The animal is part of our entertainment, in the form of horse racing and rodeos. They're also on our TV screens too and in movies. The animal has also played a role in wars to. Let's also not forget that they are seen as members of the family by the many people that adore them.

These days there are so many breeds of horses that you'd probably be hard pressed to name them. The most well-known are Mustang, Arabian and Clydesdale. Though most people probably think that one breed looks much like another the experts know better. If you're an expert and you wanted your ornaments to depict a certain breed, one that was more obscure, then you'd need to ask around and find someone that really knows their breeds so they can make you the most authentic statue or figure possible.

One of the best ways of displaying figures is to setup a display cabinet. Where you choose to situate it is important. Obviously, the size of the cabinet will depend on the size of the collection. Therefore, you'll need to make sure that the room you put the cabinet in is big enough to house it.

Displaying your figures isn't an art form but it isn't an exercise in being slapdash either. Try to mix and match each figure according, putting objects of the same color together. If this isn't quite to your taste then maybe you would prefer your cabinet to tell a story, perhaps of the role horses have had in our history.

Those that are new to collecting are in the unique position where they can actually look at things from scratch and decide exactly how they'd like the collection to look. This is where your love of certain breeds might come into play. The choices you make could also depend on how much you have to spend, the types of material you like, or even other preferences. For instance, you might like a certain artist, or only like ornaments of a certain size.

The ornaments can be depicted in various materials, such as metal, pewter, plastic, wood, crystal and porcelain. Obviously, some materials look better than others and some are pricier than others. Plastic is very durable, as is pewter, and both are less expensive when compared to things like porcelain and crystal. It should also be remembered that porcelain and crystal break far easier than other materials, so if you have kids it might be better to get the tougher materials.

If you're good with your hands then you might want to consider making ornaments yourself. You could get the kids involved and make presents for others. If giving away the things you make is a problem for you, just make small figures of horses and put them on your Christmas tree.

Horse figures are made from many different materials, each with its own pros and cons. What is often considered the best looking material to use can often be the most expensive and the least durable. However, for a change from ornaments and statues, you could make horse jewelry, like bracelets and charms.
