General Information About Long Term Rehab

By Essie Craft

Research has revealed that the duration of a rehabilitation program has a significant contribution on the outcome of the treatment. In most cases, patients enrolled for a long term rehab program have a better prognosis compared to those engaged in the short term program. The duration varies from one month to several years. This duration varies depending on the extent of abuse and the number of previous treatments.

In most cases, outpatient therapy is provided as an initial treatment to this problem. When this fails, the next recommended solution is often a residential rehabilitation program, customarily about one month in duration. There are a number of factors that are considered in determining the length of the program. These include severity of addition, length of abuse and the number of previous treatments that were unsuccessful.

The time spent in the rehabilitation canter interrupts the life of the patients. As such, most of them are reluctant to undergo the treatment. However, studies conducted in the recent past show that the willingness or desire of a patient has no impact on the outcome. The outcome of a self-admission is similar to that obtained through a forceful enrollment.

It operates in form of a structured therapeutic model. It involves the involvement of the whole community in the recovery and treatment process. The addicts enrolled in these programs work, share and live together and learn the expected mode of behavior and sobriety within the community. For a long period of time, work has been used as a therapy to treat this condition. It instills in them important values and skills that improve their productivity.

In addition to the work training, counseling and traditional therapy are also offered. Generally, there are always AA or group meetings in the evening. These are designed to promote self-awareness over the underlying causes of abuse. The addictions professionals also offer behavioral and conventional therapy. The addicts are given enough time to incorporate these skills in their daily lives before being exposed to the home environment where they have ready access to alcohol and drugs.

The long term rehab is based on a structured environment that is under strict control. Patients have to earn additional privileges and freedom by demonstrating the expected values and mode of behavior. Some of the privileges include short passes out of the residential area, better roles and supervisory roles. The rewards and incentives are designed to motivate them to live in a particular way.

There are various challenges faced in the treatment of severe addictions. It is further complicated by the fact that any therapies that were administered previously were unsuccessful. A long term program gives a patient enough time to adjust to the new way of life and incorporate the new skills and information in their daily lives. It gives them an opportunity to benefit from honest relationships and enjoy a comfortable life free from any chemicals. They acquire the skills required to make them productive society members.

The decision to choose a long term rehab signifies commitment to change for better health. It is the best option for those with severe addiction. The benefits of this program far outweigh the disadvantages. It effectively treats the addiction as well as other needs of the patients such as mental or medical health issues. A complete detoxification is performed to avoid signs of relapse.
