By Linda Maynard

Irrigation in MI refers to one very prominent activity in agriculture. Here, crops and other plants are cultivated under the influence of additional water save for the natural sources. Various methods of watering are practiced in this place and as such, various crops are grown.

The methods used in watering are different depending on a number of factors. Among the factors influencing choice of a method of watering is the slope of the land, the sources of water available, the levels of technological development of the involved country, the crop grown as well as the skills that the involved farmers have concerning the different forms of watering.

The landscape of the land is one very major determinant of what is grown and which method is used. In areas with flat terrain, crops requiring so much water may be preferred. The soils of these places must also have very good ability to retain water. Crops that flourish so well in such places include rice among some other cereals. The form of watering so done is known as basin irrigation.

The amount of water available in a place for this practice is also of very great influence. Places with minimal water supply may take a particular line of agricultural specialization. In these places, the main type of watering used is that that is most economical. Among these methods are sprinkler methods as well as drip method. The crops also watered by these means include grass, trees that are grown far apart as well as other plants that are not very tall.

The levels of technology and skill among the farmers are also a great determinant of which line is taken in watering crops. Places deficient of both modern skills and equipment may resort to the use of very primitive methods such as can method of watering. Here, water is carried from the sources in cans or buckets, transported to the farms and then poured on the plants. This method is quite of some illiterate nature, very much time wasting and very involving too.

Irrigation in agriculture is a method that has very many advantages. Among these are factors such as increasing food reliance of the people in MI, earning the country extra cash from foreign exchange activities in international trade, providing employment to different classes of people and increasing the general productivity of the land.

However, this method also has its shortcomings. In case the sources of water dry up, then the crops may just wither. This may lead to very great losses especially if the farmers had spent everything on developing the crops. Various methods of watering plants are also in most cases associated with diseases such as malaria, since stagnant water provides breeding places for mosquitoes.

Irrigation in MI is a very wide sector. It is through this method of agriculture that most of the food in the region has been produced. More and more people are taking up the practice, since it is a great income earner.
