The Best Stall Bedding For Horses

By Tisha Greer

There are few creatures on earth more beautiful than a horse. They have been a boon to man since the beginning of time. These magnificent creatures need to be cared for on a regular basis if they are to maintain good health. One of those needs is the installation of proper stall bedding for their safety and comfort.

The stable is home to the animal a number of hours each day. How it is prepared and kept up provides support for the animals legs and hooves. Damp and cold is difficult for them to tolerate so bedding choices must keep these away. These areas have to be cleaned daily and that chore will aid you in deciding what material to use.

One of the best choices you can make is any material that provides absorbency. This will reduce the odor from the animals urine and feces. When of good quality, this material will be required in smaller amounts than others making clean up quick and easy.

Some will choose to use sawdust but this is not the best option for your horse. In many, this product is known to cause respiratory problems that can become quite severe. A better choice is wood shavings that are not able to be inhaled but provide the same elements of easy removal of waste matter.

For some, the most cost effective product is the use of straw. It may not be used as often as it once was, but straw offers everything you need in regard to keeping an animals bedding optimum in every manner. Another option involving little cost is making use of shredded cardboard and paper. These items are environmentally friendly and can be easily composted.

Large breeding farms with numerous horses will invest in rubber matting. It is a durable material that is placed over a flat surface inside the stall. The drainage system below allows for the ultimate ease in clean up and provides comfort and warmth. Some straw can be added when desired but very little of it is required. Advantages are plentiful and include warmth, safety, and cleanliness. There are no holes to fill and is much less work to maintain.

Breeding farms will have use of one or more foaling stalls. Some of the same options already mentioned will work nicely but the basis of the floor should be level and made up of a product that is environmentally sound. Limestone and clay would be two excellent choices. Special foaling mats can be purchased for this use but the ground below has to be completely flat to keep the mare and the foal from unintended injury.

No matte what the basis of material is that you use for stall bedding, there is one thing that cannot be overlooked. These stalls have to be cleaned each and every day to provide the basis for a healthy and happy animal. Horse farmers take this amount of work in stride and consider it a vital part of each work day. After all, their livelihood could be at stake were they to not do the required clean up.
