On Grid Solar Systems And Your Power

By Vicki Diaz

Our sun puts out huge amounts of energy. Eventually someone found a way to harvest this power and ever since then you are able to spot solar panels almost anywhere. The home versions have also made their way to market and consumers are installing on grid solar systems every day. They are doing so because it saves them money. Then you have those who do it because they feel they are helping the planet by doing so.

The panels that people install onto their roofs can sometimes be an unsightly addition to the home, but if they are installed tastefully and with some common sense people can actually make them blend in rather nicely. Do not be fooled however, these are by no means cheap and it may take a while before you will see any direct benefit.

People think by installing such things they will become energy independent and no longer need to use the power from the local company. The problem is, they do. What they usually do not realize until much later and after much more money spent is that they are just supplementing their energy that they pay for. Yes, they do use less power from the power company, but they are not power-independent.

In most homes that have such things installed they use the electricity that is generated to power the home or to supplement the power bought from the power company. These do something different. The "on" type is connected to the power grid run by the company and the energy that is gathered and created by the panels on the home go back into the grids.

When you have this type of kit installed on your home the panels will gather sunlight and convert it into energy all day long. However, instead of pushing all that energy into a battery that is utilized by the home at night or times when there is no sun, it goes into the power grid. This is where it gets interesting.

One of the major drawbacks of being grid-tied is that if the power goes out, so does your solar system. If your not grid-tied then you would have an independent system that would be able to sustain itself with its back-up power it had saved while the outage continued. The problem is that these batteries never hold more than a few hours to a days worth of electric.

All of these can generate a good amount of electricity for many uses. People can save it in a battery of sorts for later or send it back into the system to be used by the city, state, or electric companies. Either way the general public having the ability to make their own power has been a long time coming.

The on grid solar systems have made a lot of people more energy independent and this is something that a great many people have been waiting for. Those who utilize these on their homes or businesses are doing themselves a great service and in time they will reap the benefits of a program that when started had its skeptics but now everyone is a believer.
