Latest Consumer Bureau Issue Is Credit Card Hotline

The latest fight over the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau involves a charge card hotline. Consumers could call this hotline to register a complaint, and the agency would compile the information it receives in a database which it would use when and if it decided to act on a complaint. However, that is the kind of in-formation is easily misused, which is why banks and card issuers want some restraints placed on how it could be used. This would help keep all payday cash advance information private.

Charge cards to get crowdsourcing penalties

A lot of debate was put to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau before the credit card hot-line was considered. This hotline would make it so consumers can complain about credit card issuers and practices they have, Daily Finance reports. The Bureau would take the data consumers call in with reporting a company and give it to the states. Essentially, the complaint system would be crowdsourcing; the information would come straight from the individuals. Then, government officials would get the grievances and fine card issuers. They would not even make an effort to determine what the problem was first. Card issuers and banks, according to Bloomberg, are looking to keep the database private, so only the card issuer, the consumer who complained and the right regulatory agency can view information about the individual complaint.

Keeping data hidden

The flow of data can hurt banks a lot, which is they are fighting for private information. Currently, the complaint line is set to go live on July 21, when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is supposed to start operations. Everything said about credit card issuers can be accessed with the way the line is set up. It is important to consider that individuals will always complain about fees no matter what, although banks and card issuers may just want the data private so nobody will know what their dishonest practices are. It could be terrible for the public data to be streaming like that.

How the future is looking

Almost every part of customer finance, including debit and charge cards, mortgages and payday loans, will be monitored by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Congress has been fighting over the organization. There were three bills on the bureau introduced though. Two of these would change who is in charge of it, Reuters states. One bill would keep the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from taking over regulatory activity from other agencies until it has a ded-icated director and another would replace the current structure from having a single director to having a five member panel. The majority of the Republicans do not like the idea of Warren directing the bureau. She has helped get it set up as an adviser to the White House. The bureau is sup-posed to start operations in July. This might not actually occur though.
