Prince Charles & Unfortunate Circumstances Of Farming Organically

By Rob Sutter

One would think that anything that was run by Prince Charles would be a runaway success, right? After all, this is someone who has a tremendously high standing in Wales, meaning that he seemingly has enough money to go about any kind of endeavor. However, it seems as though - for one reason or another - he's not able to do everything well. One of such endeavors, which I was actually hoping would see a good degree of success, would be farming organically.

According to an article on TIME.com, Prince Charles of Wales had to close down his business which was run by farming organically. The reasons given were the rising prices of the crops along with the falling trade. This is a shame because it seemed like an honest farming effort, as crops were grown in on the estate's Duchy Home Farm before being sold to the public. A noble effort of course and I think that networks like Colle Farmers Market could agree that potential existed, at least initially.

The government in the U.K. was not that stellar, either, and I think that it ultimately played a part as well. The article spoke about this to some degree, as it's been said that 2008 was not a great year for the area. It was a time when a financial crisis was seen and I think it's apparent that the area did not fully bounce back from such a crisis. I believe that it can be restored to its past glory but it is seemingly taking more time than what many individuals had anticipated.

Stores have to be able to bring in profits so that they can sustain themselves. This is a key point or just about any store, whether they specialize in the selling of crops or what have you. I may enjoy these products - which can be said about others - but how many people are going to look for such qualities over their own budgets? Money is tight, after all, and people have to make smart decisions based on how their bank accounts may look in the long run.

I think that the chance Prince Charles took was one brimming with potential but it was never realized. Farming organically does take some time, so I don't expect the rates of such crops to be at the lowest possible level. However, I would like to think that they could be priced better so that more people would flock to the farm. Perhaps then the farm could have been much more effective but, then again, I don't think many people can honestly predict what would have happened otherwise.
